Courthouse Accommodations

The Bankruptcy Court of the Northern District of Alabama is committed to a policy of equal access to court facilities and services and provides reasonable accommodation, with advanced notice, when appropriate. Information about disability access by location can be found on this page.

ANNISTON Location (U.S. Courthouse)

Public access is located along Gurnee Avenue. The wheelchair-accessible ramp to the Courthouse is located at the front entrance which provides access to the front entrance door.

Two public elevators provide access to all court floors and are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. The elevator cabs have braille signage and emergency call features that accommodate individuals with visual and hearing impairment. The building fire alarm system is equipped with speaker/strobe indicators.

The building is equipped with braille signage.

There is an accessible restroom on each court floor.

Accessible parking is available at the front of the building.

A lactation and baby-changing room is provided for nursing mothers, includes an electrical outlet, and is free from intrusion.  The lactation and baby-changing room is located on the second floor, adjacent to the public restrooms. The room is open during business hours. No reservations are necessary.

BIRMINGHAM Location (Robert S. Vance Federal Building)

Public access is located along 5th Avenue North. The wheelchair-accessible ramp to the Courthouse is located at the front entrance.  Accessible Parking is located on the side of the building along 17th street.  Additionally, there is Accessible Parking located within the security fence in the back of the building, if needed, with access to the building from the rear entrance. (CSOs would need to be notified to allow entry to the secured parking area)

The building is equipped with braille signage.

A baby-changing station is located in the public restroom.
 

HUNTSVILLE Location (U.S. Courthouse)

Public access is located along Gallatin Street and Lowe Avenue. The wheelchair-accessible ramp to the Courthouse is located on Gallatin Street which provides access to the front entrance which is accessible.

Two public elevators provide access to all court floors and are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. The elevator cabs have braille signage and emergency call features that accommodate individuals with visual and hearing impairment. The building fire alarm system is equipped with speaker/strobe indicators.

Accessible loading zone/parking is located on Gallatin Street.

TUSCALOOSA Location (Richard Shelby Federal Building and Courthouse)

Public access is located at the front entrance of the courthouse along University Blvd. There are two wheelchair-accessible ramps for entrance to the building. One is located along Almon Ave., and the other is located along 20th Ave.  Both locations provide entrance through the front doors.

The elevator cabs have braille signage and emergency call features that accommodate individuals with visual and hearing impairment. The building fire alarm system is equipped with speaker/strobe indicators.

Accessible parking is available at the side of the building along Almon Ave and 20th Ave.

A baby-changing station is located in each restroom.

 

COURTROOM ACCOMMODATIONS

By mandate of the Judicial Conference, the Court is required to make reasonable accommodations for deaf and hearing-impaired participants that have proceedings before the court. Participants in a court proceeding are defined as parties, attorneys and witnesses. The required accommodation includes sign language interpretation and assisted listening device equipment.

Sign Language Interpretation: Sign language interpretation services are available to court participants.  Arrangements should be made with the court at least two weeks prior to court proceedings.

Assisted Listening Device: Assisted listening devices that will increase the volume of the sound system during court proceedings are available in all courtrooms for hearing impaired participants. Participants needing an assisted listening device should speak with courtroom personnel for accommodation.
